Description

Nail fungus is common, although not many men and women openly discuss their struggles with these fungal infections. The condition is also known as onychomycosis, and it’s caused by the same fungus that leads to athlete’s foot. 

If you have nail fungus, it doesn’t mean you have poor hygiene or a weakened immune system. The problem can affect both men and women as well as children. 

How do I know if I have nail fungus?

Nail fungus changes the appearance of affected nails, so it’s easy to know if a fungal infection is present. Some things to keep an eye out for include fingernails or toenails that are:

  • Thick

  • Distorted in shape

  • Yellow, whitish, or brown

  • Brittle

  • Crumbling

  • Visibly darkened as a result of debris accumulating beneath the nail

  • Foul- or sour-smelling

You have an elevated risk for nail fungus if you are older, have a history of athlete’s foot, have frequent cuts or abrasions on your feet, or have certain medical conditions like psoriasis or diabetes. 

How is nail fungus treated?

There are many over-the-counter products that promise to rid you of nail fungus. Some can provide a level of relief, but they are not strong enough to completely kill the fungus, so the infection often returns. 

Prescription medications can treat nail fungus from within. These drugs, however, are hard on your body, especially your liver.
